ASD Characteristics

ASD  is a neurodevelopment disorder, meaning it is a condition that affects the way the brain works. The DSM-5-TR outlines specific criteria that an individual must meet to qualify for an ASD diagnosis, including differences in social communication/interactions, and repetitive/stereotyped interests or behaviors.

ASD Characteristics

Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder may begin to present as early as infancy.  Some early signs may include limited eye contact, not responding when their name is called, delayed speech (talking), repetitive movements (such as hand flapping or repetitive rocking), limited interest in playing with others, playing with toys differently (e.g., lining up or organizing them), and/or  intense focus on specific topics/objects.

What does an evaluation look like?

Intake

In-Clinic Evaluation

In-Clinic Evaluation

Our first meeting will be via Telehealth (a phone call, FaceTime, or a Zoom/Teams session) so I can get to know you and why you are seeking an evaluation for yourself or your child. During this session, we will gather important background and developmental history to help prepare for an appropriate and individualized testing session.

Our second meeting will be in-person at our Irvine clinic. During the testing session, we will utilize standardized assessments (such as the ADOS-2) to gather further information regarding ASD characteristics. This may include engaging in play for younger children, engaging in conversation, and/or engaging in other small activities for teens/adults.

Feedback Session

Once we have reviewed all the relevant information gathered from testing, observations, interviews, and reviewing other records, we will set up a time to share our findings with you. We will review our report, diagnosis, recommendations, and resources together. We will answer any questions you have along the way.
